چکیده

A major drawback of artiicial intelligence systems that rely on declarative representations is that the eeciency of reasoning degrades quickly as the size of the knowledge base increases. To address this problem when building a system, we need to acquire not only knowledge about the domain, but also knowledge about control of reasoning. In this paper, we discuss one type of such control knowledge, namely, relevance of our knowledge to speciic problem solving goals. We show how this knowledge can be used by the problem solver either to ignore part of its knowledge or to automatically create abstractions and how the system can guide the acquisition of such knowledge. We ground our discussion in a framework in which knowledge about relevance can be stated, reasoned with and analyzed. We apply the framework to the problem of modeling physical devices, where creating abstractions for a given task is crucial in order to perform eeective problem solving.

Extending the Role-Limiting Approach: Supporting End Users to Acquire Problem-Solving Knowledge

Role-limiting approacheshave been successfulfor acquiring knowledge from domain experts. However most systems using this approachask the usera pre-determined sequenceof questions and are therefore not flexible enough for a wide range of situations. They also typically do not support acquiring problem-solving knowledge, but only instance and type information. We extend the role-limiting approach...

Performance in a planning task: The (ir)relevance of interface style and users’ cognitive style

This research investigates whether interface style (internalization or externalization) influences performance in a problem solving task. Assistance from a user interface during problem solving is often thought to make interactions easier. Interfaces often display relevant information, making recall unnecessary and relieving working memory, called externalization (e.g. feedback aids such as “gr...

Integrating Expectations from Different Sources to Help End Users Acquire Procedural Knowledge

Role-limiting approaches using explicit theories of problem-solving have been successful for acquiring knowledge from domain experts1. However most systems using this approach do not support acquiring procedural knowledge, only instance and type information. Approaches using interdependencies among different pieces of knowledge have been successful for acquiring procedural knowledge, but these ...

Acquiring Procedural Knowledge in EXPECT

The EXPECT project has focused on acquiring problemsolving knowledge for users for the last decade, using an expressive language that is open to inspection. Our aim has been to alleviate the bottleneck in creating knowledge-based systems by providing support for both knowledge engineers and end users to specify problem-solving knowledge. In this paper we summarize selected areas of current rese...
